DLI Institutions

    Vaseba Immigration > DLI Institutions

  •  DLI institutions

The Designated Learning Institution is a school that is approved by the government or territorial state government to host International students in Canada.

  • Canadian Designated Learning Institutions (DLIs)

The school which admits students from foreign land is known to be Designated Learning Institution (DLI), and here we are talking about the DLIs in Canada. There is an official list of Designated Institutions which are situated in different places in Canada, like designated learning institutions in Vancouver or Quebec. You can check the list online. So, any student from any of the foreign countries who is looking forward to studying in Canada needs to have a letter of acceptance from a DLI.

    Primary and Secondary Schools

The primary and secondary schools based in Canada are DLIs and for further studies which is post secondary school, they have to get permission from the government first to accept students from other countries.

So, all the schools/DLIs which offer study courses for post secondary schools are listed on the official Canadian DLIs list. There is a list of cic approved colleges as well. You can check the list before you enroll for such a course.

    * Staying in Canada for work/job after you finish your Graduation can only be permitted if the DLI that you have opted for allows you for a Post-Graduation Work Permit.

    DLI list Canada

The process for being a student in Canada is not so difficult. It is just that you need to understand a few things. So, first of all you need to go through the list of CIC accredited colleges/DLI colleges in Canada and then you can enroll for the course you want to pursue with the right Designated Institute.

    BEGIN YOUR PROCESS

Once the DLI or the Canadian school you want to study in has accepted your proposal they will give you a letter of acceptance after which you can apply for a permit for Immigration process.

Changing Programs/ Schools/ Level of Study

Your letter of acceptance into the DLI or the School in Canada is the main part of your educational process in Canada and you should also note that if you are studying at Post-Secondary Level, the changing of your Programs/ Schools/ Level of Study can be done without having any new study permit for the same.

But you need to notify IRCC if you have changed schools. It can be done online through your MyCIC account. However, if you have to stay for an extended period in Canada then you may have to notify the respective immigration authority and get a study permit extension.

    Primary and Secondary School

All schools in Canada are DLIs. Minor children who are dependent do need to have a study permit. So, minor kids need not apply for a study permit and they can be eligible to attend school. Be it primary or secondary, the schools offer education from Grade One to Grade Twelve according to the permissions given by the Government.

A high school diploma is given to students after they graduate from secondary schoolNon DLI Schools

As we have told you that all of the schools (primary and secondary) in Canada are DLIs but the ones who have not been given the permission to take international students are considered Non DLIs. Hence, you will be eligible to take admission in such schools or DLIs. And if in case the School you are studying in loses its status of being a DLI then you may be transferred to an alternate DLI and you can also carry on in the same school until your study permit expires.

    Designated Learning Institution Number
So, the Designated Learning Institution Number is kind of an identification number for every post secondary school in Canada. Every DLI has a different number and it generally begins with the letter “O” and is written on the application form for the study permit.
Hence, you can check the list of the DLIs in Canada and choose the school as per your need in terms of the courses offered and the location in which the school is.

    Changing Programs

Changing programs of your studies is totally based on your choices and can take place without any sort of problem at all. You need not to change your study permit or contact IRCC to update them of the changes, but it is also important to take a look at the exceptions in this matter:

    1. As we have told you earlier also that if you are opting for a change in program which demands for a stay for a longer period of time then you need to apply for an extension of your study permit.
    2. If your study permit has certain conditions which may impact your change in program then you may have to contact IRCC to update them with the changes.

    Changing Schools

For changing schools, the conditions are almost the same. You need to contact IRCC and inform them about the change of school and if your level of study is still the same then you need not to obtain a new study permit. The study permit you already have will be enough for you to carry out your studies at the new designated learning institution (DLI).

** If the international student wants to change school in the province of Quebec from outside Quebec province then the person has to obtain a certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ) before changing school.

    Changing Level of Study
You absolutely can change your level of study as you proceed in your studies. With the change in studies, it is necessary to inform IRCC of changes being made. So, if the person is changing from primary to secondary level of study, he/she need not to obtain a new study permit.
*Regarding moving from secondary to post secondary education it is necessary to obtain a new study permit from IRCC.

    School Transfers in Quebec

Well, there are certain parameters which are different from the other provinces when it comes to getting a transfer in a school which is in Quebec. As we have told you in the above paragraphs, a foreign national must obtain a certificat d’acceptation du Québec (CAQ). Only after they have received the certificate can they opt for transfer to any of the schools in Quebec province. The study permit need not be changed with a new one as your current study permit will work for the same.

This is one of the major and most important requirements that have been set by the Quebec Government. So, have a CAQ first, then you can opt schools in Quebec for transfer and inform IRCC with the new change.

    *Other Exceptions:

For students who want to transfer from one Quebec institution to another Quebec institution. May need to get a new CAQ if:

    a)  If they are changing their level of studies
    b)  If the study permit is expiring as per their CAQ certificate, then a new CAQ is needed.
