The students that are already studying in Canada can apply for study based extensions. We also help those on study visa who are looking to extend their stay in Canada to advance and further their studies. We can also provide consultation and advice in case you feel stuck and can use some advice.
The Canadian government provides visas to international students for the purpose of letting them have education from their institutions. Visa is only provided to the students who have registered in a Designated Learning Institution (DLI) and fulfill all the requirements which are essential to get into Canada for pursuing their educational courses in Canada.
When to extend the study permit for Canada?
The study permit provided by the Canadian government is only for the time when you are completing your studies in an Designated Learning Institution (DLI) with an additional 90 days extension so that you get the time to prepare to leave Canada. But then if your program/school hasn’t finished within that given period of time then you need to apply for an extension.
*The application for the renewal of your study permit must be submitted at least before 30 days of its expiry. The expiry date of your study permit is mentioned in the top right corner.
So, you just get confirmed about your passport validity, if it is still there, you can apply for your study permit extension application.
Here are a few other things that you need to keep in mind in connection to your study permit:
a) Do not travel outside Canada if your study permit is about to expire. Once you travel with such a permit, the Canadian authorities will not be allowing you again to enter Canada. You need to apply for an extension first, then only you should travel with the usual permit of yours.
b) You will have to leave Canada if your study permit has already expired (in case you have not applied for an extension). Then you may apply for a new study permit from outside Canada.
c) If your old study permit has expired and your application for the renewal is still under process in such a case the government/authorities will take a decision about the renewal of your permit and during that time you will be allowed to stay in Canada.
How to Apply for a Canada Study Permit Extension?
You can apply either online or in offline mode for your Canada study permit extension. But to save your time and make things easier, we recommend you to apply online, and that took at least 30 days before it expires.
If you are choosing the offline mode then you need to submit all of your documents on paper and you should confirm from the authorities of your province to know the exact address where you should mail your documents.
Here are a few steps that you need to follow in order to apply for your study permit extension to continue with your current DLI
A) You need to create an account first and then sign in.
B) From the home page, search for “Apply to come to Canada” and then choose the study permit option.
C) Then you need to attach a few forms like IMM 5709 — Application to Change Conditions, Extend My Stay or Remain in Canada as a Student. Download the form, fill it correctly and then upload.
D) You need to attach a few pages of your passport as per their requirements.
E) You need to upload your letter of acceptance as well.
F) Documents which show the proof of your financial support may also be uploaded which will let the authorities know that you can manage your living expenses for the next year.
G) A recent digital photo of you is required.
So, all of these steps are to be followed if you are applying through online mode using your Government of Canada account login or you need to mail them to the appropriate authorities.
How long is the processing time for a study permit extension application?
As we have told you to apply for the extension of your study permit at least before 30 days of its expiry, similarly, it may take at least 30 days for getting an answer after you submit your application. It depends on the schedule of the Canadian consulate.
Once the processing of your application is done, the Canadian consulate will inform you about the status of your permit extension application. In case, it has been rejected, you need to return to your home country and if approved, you will be allowed to stay and carry on your studies further in Canada.
And in another case, if you have not received any answer from the Consulate within 120 days of submission of your application, you should contact the Canadian consulate from your end so that you can be sure of your study permit status.
Fees for extending a Canada student permit?
Yes, you have to pay a certain amount as fees to get your application for extension processed. The fees per person per application are CAD$150 and an additional CAD$85 is to be paid if you are required to submit biometrics. So, this is a compulsory amount which has to be paid without fail if you want to get your application processed.
Applying extension for family members
If you have dependents with you and your study permit expires, automatically, your family’s status has also expired with the same, and then they along with you have to leave the country.
In case of family members, it is essential to apply for the extension of their resident permit also. So, in our recommendation you must apply it all together, for their resident permit and for your extended permit of study in Canada, so that it will be easier for the consulate to know that all of you are applying together as a family and they may consider it as a single case.
